A 16-year-old San Antonio high school student is being charged with murder after allegedly stabbing two 18-year-old girls, killing one of them, and then bragging about the violence on Snapchat.
According to friends and family of the victims, the suspect and victims had attended the same high school, Madison High School, before the victims graduated last year. They had allegedly been fighting over social media for a while, but it came to a head on Friday when Kaitlin Leonor Castilleja and Vivian Foster went to the suspect’s house. According to the police report, the three girls got into a fight in the driveway, during which the suspect stabbed both Castilleja and Foster. Castilleja died in the hospital around 2am on Friday from the fatal wounds.
The suspect’s attorney, Libby Wiedermann, has argued that the suspect attacked the 18-year-olds out of self-defense, citing her claims that they had been messaging her on social media, “stating they want to fight her.” In addition, Castilleja and Foster reportedly called 911 after the confrontation and said that they were stabbed after “jumping” a girl. The attorney also has said that the suspect is continuing to get threats on social media.
On the other hand, friends and family of the victims say that the girls were lured to the suspect’s house for a fight and that she had planned on stabbing them.
“I know the girl had every intention on taking her life,” Abby Guerra, who knew Castilleja from attending the same high school, told BuzzFeed News. “The girl told them to show up to fight, but they didn’t know what her real intentions were. We all know it was premeditated.”
Classmates told BuzzFeed News that after the fight, the suspect posted a picture to Snapchat that showed her hand covered in blood, resting on the blood-spattered driveway. The caption read, “don’t even mistake me for a bitch.”
The judge denied Wiedermann’s request that the suspect be put on house arrest rather than in detention, citing parole officers who testified that the 16-year-old “could be a threat to herself and to others.” Her next hearing is on March 18.
